Injection into a muscle

The medication goes into a muscle, usually the upper arm or the buttock. On a prescription this is written as IM. Most medicines prescribed as injections are given this way.

Injection into a vein

The medication goes straight into a vein, so it works faster. On a prescription this is written as IV. It is given slowly, while the nurse watches how the patient feels.

How the visit works

   We check the prescription, the dose and the expiry date of the medication.

   We prepare the equipment and clean the injection site.

   We give the injection and watch the reaction for a few minutes.

   If the therapy runs for several days, we arrange the next visits.

How to prepare

• The doctor's order or a report with the therapy.

• The medication in its original packaging, with the leaflet.

• Clothing that is easy to lift or roll up at the injection site.

When the therapy runs for several days, we agree the visits in advance, following the dosing schedule.
